Peter Merrett has been a friend of mine for several years. Our first meeting was probably at one of the Bjørgvin markets about 10 years ago. At that time, he was sitting on the grass with his beautiful handicrafts displayed for sale. Peter makes objects from bone and antler. They are often copies of historical finds, but sometimes just because they are beautiful. Amber is often used as a decoration on a bone element. He is the world’s best shoemaker for historical shoes.
My friend Peter
Peter lives in England, but every summer he comes to Norway to visit historical markets and meet friends.
Peter and I made an agreement about a trade. I knitted a sweater from hand-spun yarn from Old Norwegian Short Tail sheep (spælsau), and then plant-dyed yarn. He gave me free choice making the sweater, and I could choose the color and pattern myself. I warned him against this, but he didn’t change his mind about it. The result is seen in the picture below. Peter is very fond of the sweater and wears it every day a warm sweater is needed. It warms my heart that something I have made from scratch is used so much. The pattern is the original Fana sweater from the book Fanatrøyer published by Fana Husflidslag (Fana Handicraft Guild).
In exchange for the sweater, he made me a needle case in sheep bone and a small spindle whirl
